{"id":208,"date":"2005-12-10T14:11:52","date_gmt":"2005-12-10T12:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenman.co.za\/wordpress\/?p=208"},"modified":"2005-12-10T14:11:52","modified_gmt":"2005-12-10T12:11:52","slug":"gender-balance-in-uk-and-sa-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenman.co.za\/blog\/?p=208","title":{"rendered":"Gender balance in UK and SA politics."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I came across the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/shared\/spl\/hi\/uk_politics\/03\/shadow_cabinet\/html\/default.stm\">UK Shadow Cabinet<\/a> announced by the new Conservative Party leader, David Cameron. It struck me that out of 24 members, there are only 4 women. South Africa has tried hard to achieve gender parity, and has one of the highest ratios of women in office (Rwanda I think has the highest), but I was surprised that the UK Conservative Party would be so bad. Assuming the other 2 main British parties had to have a better ratio, I  looked them up. <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/shared\/spl\/hi\/uk_politics\/03\/the_cabinet\/html\/default.stm\">Labour was better<\/a>, slightly, with a ratio of 6 from 22. Surely the Liberal Democrats would better this? Nope, they were <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/shared\/spl\/hi\/uk_politics\/05\/ld_front_bench\/html\/default.stm\">the worst of the lot<\/a>, with 2 from 22, including one women whose portfolio was the oddly titled <em>Women and older people<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So how does that compare with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southafrica-newyork.net\/consulate\/ministers.htm\">the South African cabinet<\/a>? 12 from 28.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I came across the UK Shadow Cabinet announced by the new Conservative Party leader, David Cameron.
