Well, the secret of IOL’s departure from Newspaper House is out. We were moved to make way for a new tabloid called the Daily Voice.<\/p>\n
The new tabloid is apparently seen by Independent Newspapers as a spoiler. Something so trashy it won’t impact Argus sales, but enough to stir things up for the rival Sun and Kaapse Son tabloids.<\/p>\n
I’ve been ‘privileged’ to see the first free, 4-page preview. The 4 pages seem to relate to the 4 sections, Sex, Scandal, Skinner and Sport. The front page headline is Skinner vir Minner<\/em> (roughly translated as gossip for less), and a sub headline claims its rivals accuse it of being cheap and dirty<\/em>. Page 2 has an article about Lavendar Hill moffies<\/em> (make homosexual, but with quite unique Cape connotations), page 3 a topless woman and an article about lesbian oral sex at Teasers, a club in Cape Town. Page 4 is a preview of a now past Manchester United – Chelsea game, with the headline “We’re going to Mour you”, a play on Jose Mourinho, the Chelsea manager as well as moer <\/em>, which in Afrikaans can be loosely translated as fuck you up<\/em>.<\/p>\n I suspect the title will do better than they expect, and we’re seeing the beginning of a race to the bottom. Perhaps the positive side is that the broadsheets, bereft of their audience for trash, will start to improve their quality.
