I’ve just deleted about a gazillion referer spam hits from my logs. Thanks to b2evolution’s great spam-control system it’s been fairly painless, but the spam certainly had time to piss me off 🙂
I have a soft spot for quite a few sorts of illegal or at least socially disliked behaviour. Graffiti can be the art and voice of the powerless, or at least some teenage kids having fun playing at rebellion. Illegal drugs can be tried for many noble and understandable purposes, opening one’s mind to another world, another perspective, awakening spirituality, as well as escape, a permission slip, a mask, self-destruction.
But spam… Highly talented programmers wasting their skills, working for greedy, unethical corporations (and wannabe corporations), generating a quick buck while wasting the time of millions of people, taking over PC’s rendering them useless for any other task while they spew their noise across the web.
The purplish prose aside, I find it hard to find redeeming qualities in people who only want money, and will trample over others to get it. Woman-abusers, child molesters, thieves – I can easily find, if not redeeming qualities, at least reasons for their behaviour that allow me to feel sympathy. But not for greed.
