FNB Internet Banking

As part of my metamorphosis into a neurotic accountant, I get to use FNB’s internet banking service on a weekly basis. I quite like their site. It’s much simpler than Nedbank’s, for example, and everything is where you’d expect it to be, available with minimal fuss. However, at the moment it has one rather fatal… Continue reading FNB Internet Banking

The Health Nut

I’ve just come back from a few days in De Hoop nature reserve. We stayed in Lekkerwater, which is the most luxurious of the huts, having once hosted Nelson Mandela and FW De Klerk. There’s minimal electricity for lights only, but gas provides for hot water and fridges. Luxury perhaps isn’t the right word, as… Continue reading The Health Nut

The year of the Linux desktop

It’s an ironic title, before anyone gets too excited… I’m sourcing machines for a small office, looking for standard low-end machines, and I’ve been quite impressed with the willingness of hardware suppliers to install Linux. Of course I could do it myself, but I’d really like the supplier to do it on all the machines!… Continue reading The year of the Linux desktop

The Whales Revenge

Whales Revenge is an ambitious campaign to gather 1 million signatures for a petition to stop whaling. At the rate the signatures are appearing when I checked, they should do it quite easily. There’s also a flash game where you get to assist the Greenpeace ships and sink the whalers 🙂

Ian the accountant

That’s not a title I thought I’d ever use. Ever since I scraped 50% in my first year of IT studies for the accursed subject I thought I’d seen the last of in Std 7, I’ve held a particular dislike for the term. Perhaps also the fact that most organisations I’ve been involved with have… Continue reading Ian the accountant

Cape Town Book Fair

In the midst of my frenzy, I did manage to attend the Cape Town Book fair. It was a while ago, so this is hardly a topical post, but I’ve just been prompted to write something by an Exclusive Books survey. The fair was fantastic – it exceeded all my expectations. I went in shortly… Continue reading Cape Town Book Fair

Work, glorious work

For someone who enjoys quotes such as Men who work cannot dream; and wisdom comes to us in dreams and Work is the systematic suppression of a person’s real desires, I work insanely hard. The difference (so I tell myself) is that I enjoy what I do, I am not suppressing my true desires –… Continue reading Work, glorious work

IOL Technology

One of the projects I’ve been involved in for a while, IOL Technology, has finally seen the light of day. There’s still lots to come, and a few loose ends to iron out, but the site is up. Feedback, scathing or otherwise, is welcome!

Greed and need, or why I’m excited about Wengophone, the ‘open Skype’

Free Software Magazine recently ran an article entitled Wengophone: VoIP done right, with the subtitle Dreaming about a free software competitor for Skype? Maybe your wait is over. It’s a dream I share. Again, as with my world cup prejudices, that got me questioning why exactly I share that dream. Sometimes its worth questioning core… Continue reading Greed and need, or why I’m excited about Wengophone, the ‘open Skype’
