Northern Sotho Wikipedia now an official project, Afrikaans reaches 20 000 articles

Northern Sotho now has it’s own Wikipedia, becoming the 10th official South African language to do so. The project has been sitting for many years in the Incubator, where projects that aren’t yet ready are hosted and developed. It was a bit of an anomaly, as even though it was more active than many other… Continue reading Northern Sotho Wikipedia now an official project, Afrikaans reaches 20 000 articles

African language Wiktionary Update

Wikipedia never ceases to amaze me. I remember meeting a teenage Alaskan editing on the Malagasy Wikipedia. Thanks perhaps to those long wintery nights, he was learning languages like some collect stamps, and Malagasy, being an interesting language, had attracted his attention. Updating sports results as quickly as possible seems to be as popular as… Continue reading African language Wiktionary Update

A sixth African-language Wikipedia has reached the 1000 article milestone, with Wolof now sitting at 1068 articles. Two other African languages, Somali and Kabye, are also closing in on the milestone, both having moved quite quickly into the 800’s, passing the relatively stagnant Igbo and Kikongo. African Language Wikipedias Language 1/1/2007 3/8/2009 30/5/2010 Swahili 2980… Continue reading Wolof reaches 1000 Wikipedia articles

Learning Toki Pona

I’m learning Toki Pona. Most people seem to think Toki Pona is a massage technique, some sort of tantric practise, or a musical instrument. It must be the Polynesian-sounding name, but it’s more exciting than that! Toki Pona is a constructed language, similar to its more famous relatives such as Esperanto and Interlingua. Anyone who… Continue reading Learning Toki Pona
